MythFall #2: From Script to Sketch
Plus, preparing our Anne variant cover for special printing.
Hi there, Cici here!
What have we been up to last week? I’m so glad you asked!
Incident Report #1: Special Collectors’ Edition
Storytime! At one of my old jobs, I was responsible for designing product packaging. It taught me several useful skills for making comics. (In fact, every job I’ve ever worked has taught me a useful skill for making comics). In this case, it was how to prepare files for a print, including files that had special effects on them like foil or Spot UV.
This is done by creating a dedicated, solid-colored layer so that the printer knows which sections of your project will benefit from the effect.
Here is the file I prepped for the reprint of Paulina Ganucheau’s variant for Incident Report #1.
The layer in the file is red, but the Spot UV coating is clear. We’ll work with Comic Impressions to see how they want to identify the coating layer in the file. Naming the layer “Spot UV” would be a good start.
I learned to do this in Photoshop, but if you use a non-Adobe program for this type of editing, drop a recommendation in the comments! I’m looking for alternatives.
I’ll keep you posted with any updates on Dominic Glover’s “Florida Man” cover for Mr. Sunshine. Follow the campaign here to get notified when we launch.
More MythFall Sketches 🌌
That’s right! More MythFall Issue #2. Here are Allie Preswick’s beautiful sketches for pages 10, 11, and 12.

On Page 11, Allie recommended dialogue be added to panel 3. She’s split panel 3 and 4, which were a single panel in my script.
This is a problem I’ve had before. I’ve been trying to limit my script pages to 5 panels each until I get the hang of one panel’s worth of action. I broke my rule for this page and we ended up splitting it into two.
My script for MythFall 2 was 24 pages, which became 28 pages in Allie’s layouts. I’ll revise the script to match layouts before we pass it on to the letterer.
This is one of the things I really appreciate about working with Allie. She’s able to flag these issues to me and work around them to make these gorgeous pages. It motivates me to level up my scripting skills to meet her talent.
Bound By Words: Update
Bound By Words, our standalone epistolary fantasy/sapphic romance is coming along. Here’s another sneak peak of Boa Illustration’s thumbnails.
Dog Tax
Luke and Leia are shedding their winter coats. After the furpocalypse of trying to groom them myself, I decided get some professional help with deshedding.
I wanted to film Luke running around the corner in the cute summer bandana he got from the groomer but…well…
Here are their extra fluffy butts:
